内容記述 This study focused on an investigation into current status of paternal involvement in parenting and the subsequent stress experienced by fathers, in order to highlight the best direction for support leading to the promotion of paternal active involvement in child rearing. The four objectives of this study were to 1) understand fathers' awareness concerning their involvement in parenting and the extent of their real involvement, 2) explore whether fathers have parenting stress and if so, the specifics of that stress, 3) identify the factors which prevent paternal involvement in parenting, and 4) identify parenting support needs sought by fathers with infants and toddlers. The subjects of this study were fathers of infants and toddlers aged zero to three in Yamanashi Prefecture, and a questionnaire survey was used as a method of investigation. The results of the survey demonstrated that the fathers were actively involved in parenting. While more than half of them listened to their wives' problems and provided emotional support, the fathers had very few people to turn to about their concerns. It appears that they were consulted unilaterally by their wives. As to the obstacles to their involvement in parenting, they cited social factors such as busy work or difficulty in taking holidays. The fathers had low parenting stress. In order to facilitate paternal involvement in parenting, support from the workplace is necessary to secure time for child rearing.
