Methods:The subjects were 207 people living in Sapporo City and the surrounding areas, including male and female residents. The study period was from July 2012 to April 2013. Mental Health Pattern (MHP), a brief self-administered diet history questionnaire, and an eating pattern survey were used. Individual MHP scores and food and nutrition intake amounts were analyzed using Pearson’s correlation coefficient, and a multiple regression analysis was performed with the MHP score as the dependent variable. Results : The overall results for all 207 people of the multiple regression analysis, with nutritional intake as the independent variable and individual MHP scores as the dependent variable, indicated that folic acid (β = 0.15), daidzein (β = -0.27), zinc (β = 0.16), and saturated fatty acid (β = -0.15) were significant variables (p < 0.05). In a comparison by gender and age, young men were found to have higher Stress Check List(SCL) scores than the other groups (p < 0.05). Discussion:The results of the study suggest that a dietary pattern of not eating midnight snacks, high zinc intake, high folic acid intake, and low saturated fatty acid intake is related to a state of good mental health.
