Five nurses in their second year of work following graduation were included in the study. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews, and analyzed by qualitative inductive analysis using the following 10 categories: reason for repeating a year, the student's mental state at the time of the failed exam/when repeating the year, pressures felt by the student at the time of instruction, aspects of the training environment that increased the pressure felt by the student, the reactions of the student's parents to the news that the student had failed and would be repeating the year, educational activities requested of the teacher by the student, support for the student's recovery, support systems that fostered the student's self-awareness, messages sent to juniors, and review of practicum content to enhance practical skills. Students who failed and repeated a year tended to respond badly to pressure and to feel nervous and panicked during instruction.
