Parents, in particular mothers, are interested in their children's dietary education; however, due to limitations in knowledge and time, they are unable to be fully involved, and may be able to participate in a one-time dietary education class, but find it difficult to attend continuous dietary education classes. Our previous study, conducted in cooperation with kindergartens and nursery schools which over 90% of 4 or 5-year-old children in Sapporo attended, revealed that long-term continuous dietary education classes proved effective for improving mothers' awareness of diet and mothers' and children's eating behavior. Given this, aiming to develop, in cooperation with kindergartens and nursery schools, effective dietary education that fosters preschoolers' ability to make healthy food choices, we conducted a questionnaire survey with all kindergartens and nursery schools in Sapporo to clarify the practice of dietary education and cooperation with the local community and to pursue possibilities for cooperating with them to promote and develop continuous dietary education activities for children and mothers. In total, 59% of the kindergartens and 57% of the nursery schools responded. From the results, it was indicated that annual dietary education plans were worked out in nursery school higher than in kindergartens, and that both kindergartens and nursery schools conducted dietary education activities at various opportunities but continuous dietary education activities were few.
