this study, a questionnaire survey was conducted on the status of vegetable growing activities and the effects of nutrition education in all kindergartens in a city in Hokkaido. Of the 74 kindergartens in our sample that performed vegetable growing activities in FY 2011, 85% grew vegetables on site, 85% grew tomatoes, and 100% engaged their kindergarteners in some gardening activities (e.g., harvesting). In more than 85% of the kindergartens, the number of \"children who like the vegetable they grew\" and \"children showing interest and attention toward food\" increased. Furthermore, it was shown that compared to the kindergartens engaging children in gardening activities less than once a week, the kindergartens that held gardening activities at least once a week had a higher rate of children who began exhibiting interest in food and children who attempted to eat foods that they did not like.Also, it was revealed that compared to the kindergartens without parent participation in gardening activities, the kindergartens with parent participation had a higher rate of children who helped in meal preparation and cleaning up after meals.
