Students studying nutrition science or nursing science at a university or nursing school, respectively, completed a questionnaire on personality traits and habitual activities (35 items), and on dietary life; the section on dietary life was divided into 5 fields (eating habits, contents of meals, upbringing with respect to eating, eating environment and attitudes toward eating). The scores revealed that there was an association between dietary life and personality traits. The results suggested that the 5 fields of dietary life are related to some items of adolescent personality traits. In particular, because eating environment and attitudes toward eating correlated with a large number of items dealing with personality traits, these 2 fields were shown to be shaped as much as, if not more than, contents of meals by adolescent personality traits. In addition, an outgoing personality was observed to be associated with desirable dietary life during childhood.
